Blog: Easy steps to share Levy benefits

27/3/2017

Details of the government’s new Apprenticeship Levy scheme have been provided at various stages over recent months. Now it is time for those organisations that qualify – with an annual payroll of £3million or more – to formally register.

It is only recently that things have become clearer and the steps to take have become practical as well as theoretical.

The brand new apprenticeships management system for levy paying employers is known as the Apprenticeship Service (previously the Digital Apprenticeship Service or DAS).

First of all, make sure you create an Apprenticeship Service account. By doing this, you will be able to find training providers who can help deliver your apprenticeship programmes, pay for training and assessment in England and manage your funds.

To create an account you will need your Government Gateway login details for PAYE schemes you want to include (see payroll if you don’t have it) and the details for each PAYE reference that you will be creating an account for, including Companies House or charity number.

Once you have set up your account, you will arrive at the account home screen. There is an array of functions for different business departments to use including:

  • ‘Funding’ to find out how much you have available to spend, your transactions and funds you could lose if you leave them to timeout.
  • The ‘Apprentices’ section allows you to add apprentices, review and approve cohorts and pause or stop apprentices training.
  • ‘Find training’ allows businesses to search for new apprenticeship training or to find out about choosing an assessment organisation.
  • Manage user access to the account in the ‘Team’ function.
  • ‘To do tasks’ on the right-hand side bar provide quick links to the relevant sections of the government’s website. Note that not all of these functions or areas of the site will be in use on launch.

Once the levy for April has been declared, employers will be able to view this in their account from the end of May 2017.  They will be asked to accept an agreement with the Skills Funding Agency which sets out the terms for use of the Apprenticeship Service.

From May 1, employers will be able to use the funds to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment of new and existing employees.
