Case Study – Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, NHS

The Need

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Chorley and South Ribble Hospital and Royal Preston Hospital.  With a team of security officers covering the two sites, staff identified a need to enhance the skills of the security officers so that they were better equipped to deal with community safety. An initial idea was for the security officers to be trained as special constables.  However, after looking into the idea more, it became apparent that this was not feasible and so an alternative had to be found.

The Solution

This is where Jigsaw Training came into the picture.  Staff from the Trust attended a conference on ‘Community Accreditation’, which was presented by James Blackhurst from Jigsaw Training.  He explained that the security officers could undertake a five-day course and at the end of it gain a City and Guilds level two certificate in Community Safety for Accredited Persons.  It became apparent after this meeting that the programme was suitable for staff and so the training went ahead.  To help minimise disruption, the training took place at the Trust and all security officers successfully achieved accreditation.

The Benefits

Chris Mumberson, Security Supervisor at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “The course leader, Jeff Baines, was exceptional and enabled all staff to easily understand and learn the principles of the course, whilst also offering individual support.

“The five-day course was tailored to our needs and delivered in a professional manner.  We would have no hesitation in recommending Jigsaw Training to other organisations.”
